Barden Students Travel to Washington The Barden Gary Foundation in partnership with the Close Up Program at Emerson School for the Visual & Performing Arts selected a group of students from Emerson, West Side, Roosevelt, Lew Wallace and Wirt High Schools to participate in the 2009 Close Up Inaugural Week activities. Close Up is a weeklong government studies program for high school students. The entire program takes place in Washington, D.C. which reflects the belief that a “close up” look at our government encourages students to grow in their understanding of the democratic process. Students will attend workshops, meet with members of Congress or their staffs, representatives from various cabinet departments, lobbyists, embassy officials and members of the media. The highlight of the trip most certainly will be when the students witness the swearing in of Barack Obama the next President of the United States of America and participate in a number of special inaugural events arranged by the Close Up Foundation. The Barden Gary Foundation provided funding for the trip in addition to a grant from the John S. & James L. Knight Foundation Advised Fund held by the Legacy Foundation, to provide resources for students participating in the Close Up program during the inaugural week in Washington, D.C.
